Overview

The General Manager at Manchester Tank’s Bedford, Indiana manufacturing plant is responsible for directing the production, distribution and administrative operations for the facility by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate managers and supervisors. The objective is to maximize customer, corporate, and employee expectations of the management team’s performance. This position has six direct reports. This position reports to the VP of Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Using process, quality and production improvement methodologies, the General Manager directs the development, planning, implementation and maintenance of manufacturing methods for new and existing products. This includes outgoing quality, safety and efficiency improvement for all manufactured operations and compliance with safety, state and federal regulations.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures, formulating manufacturing operations strategies, building and mentoring manufacturing employees and driving business results. This includes ensuring quality equipment, materials and production standards, overseeing and maintain manufacturing budgets and working with engineers and purchasing team members to manufacture quality products that will meet customer’s expectations in the most cost-effective manner.
  • Assumes full P&L responsibility for the Bedford facility.
  • Provides overall leadership, direction and motivation to all team members related to safety initiatives with the goal of optimizing the culture of “safety first” throughout the plant’s operations.
  • Supervises production leadership. Controls quality, cost of production, distribution and receiving of materials through appropriate team leaders.
  • Leads the creation and implementation of tactical plans to achieve Manchester Tank’s Strategic Objectives. Extends Manchester’s Strategic Vision to production managers and team members through communications tactics, goal alignment and performance management.
  • Leads efficient use of capital spending and utilization.
  • Consistently meets and exceeds customer expectations for product delivery and quality.
  • Provides training, leadership and represents a positive, enthusiastic role model so as to create a positive place to work. Ensures talent is identified, mentored and developed to support succession planning. Leads problem-solving activities in this area as necessary.
  • Places significant emphasis on coaching Team Leaders on leadership behaviors and competencies. Ensures leaders have development plans in place and are updated annually. Regularly provides Managers performance feedback.
  • Develops, maintains and delivers employee performance evaluations to provide personal growth and enhance team capabilities.
  • Represents Manchester Tank in the community and promotes the organization’s goodwill and interests in community activities.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Seven or more years of experience in manufacturing required
  • Three or more years of high-level manufacturing plant leadership (i.e., Operations Manager, etc.) experience required 
  • Extensive experience working directly with a significant mix of the following manufacturing-related functional areas required: Production, quality, engineering, purchasing, materials planning, accounting, human resources, information systems, etc.
  • ASME Pressure vessel and metal fabrication experience is desired
  • Experience in a Lean work environment highly preferred
  • Ability to manage/work with a union workforce preferred

 

Additional Requirements

 

  • Proven background in effective management of P&L, as well as the ability to assure key production metrics are met to meet operating unit objectives
  • Demonstrated successful performance in business planning, and product development in a high growth environment
  • Significant experience in leading manufacturing-related safety initiatives
  • Experience with and commitment to team-oriented management styles and methodologies, with particular knowledge of Lean techniques and Total Quality Commitment.
  • Must have career history characterized by strong employers operating in growth environments; stability in employment and success in assignments.
